This poster was a tribute to Hat Boi- a Vietnamese traditional theatrical performance. This work, among works from over 40 illustrators, app developers, and animators, is on display at Ve Ve Hat Boi exhibition. The exhibition as well as other related activities is the artists' effort of raising awareness of the dying art form.

This illustration draws inspiration from Vietnamese fairy tales, classic paintings and cultural clash. Here I try putting two seemingly unrelated concepts next to each other to find what i expect to be an interesting outcome, to create an alternate universe with this particular combination.

Some of the concepts I placed together: Lotus and the sea, Venus and pop culture, Dürer and the Edo period, and the Renaissance and Vietnam.

Noah the Boatman (detail)

The inspiration for this piece came from stories about the boatmen, Vietnamese refugees that fleeted the country when the Communist took over the government and claimed victory. These refugee risked their life leaving on body-stuffed small boat in hope of getting to the new land so they can start fresh. Some never made it. And those who were fortunately enough to come to Europe and America built a new home on strange territory.

I imagined those refugees were travel on the Ark of Noah, which were destined to save their life. Instead of animals, the Ark were packed with people, with a culture that is kept in tradition no matter how far it may sail from the place of their origin.

I got the inspiration for this illustration from an article about how Vietnamese children nowadays don't celebrate mid-autumn festival the same way their parents used to, with color-tinted glass-paper lanterns and mooncakes. This causes trouble for people that live on the tradition of making lantern. Soon enough there will be less and less people that make traditional lantern, leading to the vanishing of a beautiful tradition.
